T I S RADIO STATIONS

    Governmental entities, as well as park districts and authorities, may be eligible to operate a TIS radio station (also known as Highway Advisory Radio, HAR for short) for the purpose of disseminating information to travellers. A license is required before construction of or operation of a Travellers' Information Station may commence. This service was created in 1977 by the FCC.

    T I S or H A R stations operate in the AM Broadcast Band (530 kHz - 1700 kHz) and are limited to a 10 watt transmitter output power and the antenna height may not exceed 15 meters (49.2 feet). These stations may not transmit commercial information. This service is not available to individuals or groups, but only to governmental entities and park districts. Rare exceptions exist to the wattage restrictions, such as the TIS station at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) as thier station operates at 100 watts.

    At EBS, we partner with LPB and other companies to provide complete TIS or HAR frequency searches, electronic application filing with the FCC and finally, providing equipment to the government agency wishing to build the station. EBS has qualified engineers to also install TIS stations.
